Squadron merchandise design

Background

504 (County of Nottingham) Squadron, based at RAF Wittering, approached us with a unique challenge: to breathe new life into their merchandise offerings. Their goal was to create a collection of items that resonated with the serving members and veterans of the Royal Air Force while embodying the squadron’s ethos and camaraderie.

Their existing range was limited to traditional military-themed products, which, while functional, lacked broader appeal. The squadron sought to expand their offering to engage a wider audience and strengthen their esprit de corps.

Objectives

The brief was clear: develop merchandise that drew inspiration from the squadron crest, self-hosted military training exercises, and the distinct lifestyle associated with RAF service. The products needed to feel authentic, evoke pride, and serve as a connection to the squadron’s heritage, while also appealing to an audience beyond the immediate squadron family.

Our approach

Drawing inspiration from the squadron’s crest, military exercises, and the evolving RAF lifestyle, we developed four distinctive merchandise ranges, each offering something unique to the squadron community:

  • Deconstructed Roundel
A modern take on the iconic RAF roundel, this range represents the evolving lifestyle of the Royal Air Force. Subtle, minimalist designs give a nod to tradition while incorporating a contemporary twist. The collection includes T-shirts, hoodies, and caps, perfect for those seeking stylish yet understated apparel.

  • Varsity
Inspired by American collegiate style, the Varsity range features bold prints and classic garment cuts. With designs that channel teamwork and camaraderie, this collection includes bomber jackets, sweatshirts, and letterman-style accessories, creating a sporty and spirited vibe.

  • Mighty Oaks
This range takes the heraldic oak tree from the squadron’s crest and reimagines it into casual wear. Featuring nature-inspired graphics and earthy tones, the Mighty Oaks line includes comfortable T-shirts, soft sweatshirts, and tote bags, blending pride in heritage with everyday wearability.

  • Military Life
Highlighting the quirks and traditions of military life, this range includes designs inspired by recognisable slogans, prints, and details such as the ingredients list from a standard ration pack. It’s a humorous and nostalgic nod to life in the forces, offering mugs, graphic tees, and utility pouches.

Results

The new merchandise ranges have reinvigorated the squadron shop, providing members with an exciting selection of modern, versatile items that celebrate their identity. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with squadron members, veterans, and even wider audiences embracing the new designs.

Future Outlook

With the introduction of these ranges, 504 Squadron expects an increase in sales and engagement within their community. The merchandise not only serves as a source of pride but also as a tangible connection to the squadron’s legacy. As the ranges continue to gain popularity, there’s potential for expansion into new items and designs, ensuring the shop remains fresh and relevant for years to come.

This project underscored the importance of combining heritage with innovation—a balance we were proud to achieve for 504 Squadron.
